Debating Union

The Columbia Political Union's Debating Union featuring a large student membership which participates in and hosts regular debates about contemporary issues. The CPU Debating Union is a core of CPU’s activity and a center for social life and group bonding among CPU’s general body membership. The CPU Debating Union also has regularly partnered with other groups on campus including the Columbia Debate Society, the Columbia International Relations Council & Association (CIRCA), Columbia University Democrats, Columbia University Republicans, and more.

Over the course of the 2021-2022 academic year, the Columbia Political Union's Debating Union have hosted several campus wide debates involving both professors and students. Topics have ranged from “Billionaires should not exist” to “The United States is a force for good in the world."

In the 2022-2023 academic year, the Columbia Political Union plans to use its Debating Union to convene a large group with at least 50 active members from across the political spectrum, with monthly or bimonthly debates about important contemporary political issues, designed to maximize productive dialogue.
