Civic Scholars Program
The Civic Scholars Program is the Columbia Political Union’s civic education, mentorship, and outreach initiative for New York City high school students. Designed to expand access to political knowledge, professional opportunities, and civic engagement, the program connects students with educational programming, mentorship, and hands-on experiences in government, advocacy, campaigns, media, and public service.
Civic Scholars aims to help students develop a deeper understanding of politics, public policy, and civic participation while equipping them with the practical skills and professional support necessary to pursue meaningful opportunities in their communities and beyond.
Through the program, students gain access to:
-
Civic and political education programming
-
Mentorship from Columbia students and professionals
-
Training in advocacy, organizing, leadership, and communication
-
Internship and volunteer opportunities with vetted organizations and campaigns
-
Speaker events and workshops featuring professionals across politics, law, media, and public policy
-
Resources and guidance related to civic engagement, public service, and professional development
A core part of Civic Scholars is connecting students with customized internship and engagement opportunities aligned with their interests. Students may be matched with short- or long-term opportunities at nonprofits, advocacy organizations, campaigns, media outlets, and civic institutions, where they can gain firsthand experience and mentorship from professionals in the field.
Participants also complete a structured training curriculum designed to prepare them for real-world civic and professional environments. Programming includes workshops and seminars focused on activism, political engagement, leadership, communications, and career development.
The Civic Scholars Program is entirely free for accepted students and seeks to widen access to opportunities that are often inaccessible to many young people interested in politics and public service. Through mentorship, education, and practical experience, Civic Scholars aims to build a stronger pipeline of informed and engaged civic leaders across New York City.
